Dr Hannah Durand (she/her) joined the 我要吃瓜 as a lecturer in Psychology in 2021. She is interested in chronic illness self- and shared-management behaviours across the lifespan, in particular adherence to medical treatment and pain self-management.

Dr Durand completed her undergraduate and graduate training at the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from University College Cork. She completed her PhD in Health Psychology in 2018 under the supervision of Professor Gerry Molloy (Psychology) and Professor Andrew Murphy (General Practice) with funding from a Health Research Board Patient-Oriented Research Award. Her PhD explored the prevalence and theoretical predictors of medication non-adherence among patients with apparent treatment-resistant hypertension in primary care in Ireland.

After completing her PhD, Dr Durand went on to hold a fixed-term lectureship at NUI Galway. She subsequently completed two postdocs there. The first, at the Centre for Pain Research, examined the feasibility of a combined Irish-adapted Teens Taking Charge and iPeer2Peer self-management programme for adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The second examined barriers and facilitators of adherence to physical distancing measures in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland. Findings from this research have been used to guide policy development in Ireland to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

In recent years, Dr Durand has developed a strong research interest in menstrual health. She aims to develop a programme of research to address a variety of barriers to receiving adequate healthcare and pain management support for gynaecological and menstrual health issues, such as dysmenorrhea. In particular, she is interested in the promotion of menstrual health literacy and appropriate help-seeking for menstrual pain.

Dr Durand has received several commendations for her work. In 2015 she received the inaugural Ruth Curtis Award for outstanding performance on the MSc Health Psychology at NUI Galway. She was awarded the Pain Research Medal of the Irish Pain Society on two occasions, in 2015 and 2020, for her research on chronic pain among school-aged children and menstrual pain among third-level students in Ireland. In 2018 she received the Early Career Award of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine for her outstanding contribution to the field of behavioural medicine at an early career stage. She received the Herman Schaalma Award of the European Health Psychology Society in 2020, for her PhD research on medication adherence in treatment-resistant hypertension. Most recently she was awarded the 2023 Hannah McGee Early Career Excellence in Research/Practice Award by the Psychological Society of Ireland Division of Health Psychology for the excellence and breadth of her contribution to advancing the science and profession of health psychology

Dr Durand is committed to advancing the science and application of health psychology through improved methods, research integrity, and provision of meaningful supports for early career researchers. She is an active member of the European Health Psychology Society, and serves on the Synergy Board, the Special Interest Groups Leading Committee, and the Ari Haukkala Mentoring Programme Task and Finish Group.

My research interests lie within the broad fields of health psychology and behavioural medicine. I am particularly interested in chronic illness self- and shared-management across the lifespan.

Applications from students with shared interests in any of the following topics are particularly welcome: gynaecological and menstrual health; chronic pain across the lifespan; pain in vulnerable populations; treatment adherence; vaccination; blood donation; health literacy.
