Prior to obtaining my PhD from the University of Strathclyde in 2019, I worked in a number of positions across the sporting industry. This included roles with national agencies, governing bodies of sport and local authorities. My PhD itself focused on leadership within professional rugby.

I also am a chartered sport & exercise psychologist. I previously worked for the sportscotland institute of sport between 2019 and 2022. I still hold a contracted freelance role as Head of Psychology for Scottish Golf.

My research interests relate to leadership in professional and elite sport. This comes in three forms. First, how those involved in leadership groups bring the concept to life within the daily practice of organisations. Specifically, how individuals collectively navigate moral and practical problems day-to-day. Second, the career development of individuals within sport into leadership positions. For example, the progressions of rugby players into captaincy or coaching positions. Finally, the impact on the mental health of those deemed to be in such positions by potential a need to appear 'tough' or in control. In general, my work is focused on those working in elite golf and rugby.

Currently, I teach on the MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology. In particular I enjoy teaching the applied elements within the MSc. I find it very fulfilling supporting students in their first steps into the applied world whether that involves ethical dilemmas, various use of modalities (e.g. CBT, person centred etc.) or how to successfully engage with industry partners. I am also fortunate to support dissertation students both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in compiling a number of interesting projects.
