我要吃瓜 me
I am an IAPETUS PhD researcher in Biological and Environmental Sciences, studying public awareness and perceptions of invasive non-native species. My project uses conservation culturomics techniques to gain information from the internet about public awareness, sentiment and perceptions of British invasive non-native species. I am also a representative on the PhD forum.
Before coming to Stirling, I worked as a school teacher in primary and secondary schools across England and Scotland. I hold an undergraduate degree in biology with Arabic and an MSc in psychology from the University of St Andrews.
Outside of my PhD, I am the president of Stirling University Parkour Club. I coach trampoline and gymnastics and represent the University in BUCS/SSS competitions as well as competing on the Scottish Gymnastics trampolining circuit.
My research interests include the use of interdisciplinary methods, combining invasion biology with social science techniques.
I am interested in what Google search trends can tell us about public awareness of UK invasive species. I also look at public sentiment towards invasive non-native species, comparing online data (e.g. text from social and news media) with recruited research participants' self-reported perceptions of species. This information is vital if we are to continue managing invasive species - a complex task, which cannot succeed without stakeholder support and public participation. My talk at the International Young Researchers Conference on Invasive Species 2025 gives some more details on this research:
Public awareness and perceptions of biological invasions can support successful ecosystem management, but they are not enough unless they translate into action. I am studying the impact of public information campaigns and invasive non-native species education, investigating the lasting changes in awareness, perceptions and behaviour that they may cause.
