Project

Optimisation and validation of successful stunning practices in tropical prawn farms

Funded by .

Collaboration with Benchmark Animal Health.

This project proposal follows the work conducted on the OP funded project 'OP Validation of operational indicators of consciousness in tropical prawns (Penaeus vannamei); Project ID 1869801' that aimed at developing methods to measure neurological activity (EEG) in tropical prawns following electrical stunning as a humane method and link neurological data with behavioral responses of the animals post-stun. The laboratory phase is to be completed at the end of Jan 24 and we are now seeking funding to test, optimise and validate electrical stunning in commercial settings by measuring behavioural responses observed post-stun, record stress-related measures such as L-Lactate and autotomy and evaluate effects on the quality of the product.
