Abstract
First paragraph:
Thomas Brochard’s The World of the Notary presents fresh insights into a profession that has been confined to the margins of historical discourse for too long. Informative and detailed, this booklet combines a series of thoroughly researched case studies into a detailed examination of the role and provision of notaries in Scotland’s northern shires (Ross, Sutherland, Caithness, and the Outer Hebrides) from 1500 to 1700. The study focuses on the everyday life of legal professionals across Scotland, highlighting their role in the wider contexts of religious reform, social change, and modernisation, to create a compelling account of the diverse role notaries and other legal personnel played in early modern Scotland.
