Lockett M & Cowley J (2025) CONCEPTS IN MOTION: IMPLEMENTING CONCEPT-BASED PE IN AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL. Physical Education Matters.
Abstract
This study examines the perspectives and practices of elementary international school specialist physical education (PE) teachers. It explores how educators navigate the complexities of implementing a concept-based curriculum, by adopting a collaborative process between researchers and participants. The research utilises action research and self-study methodologies to learn more about the opportunities and challenges of teaching a concept-based PE curriculum. Action research addresses real-world challenges by fostering collaboration and developing practical solutions. At the
same time, self-study emphasises the researcher’s reflective practice, deepening personal understanding and contributing valuable insights to the educational community. Together, these methodologies create a framework that bridges theory and practice, unpacking the benefits and barriers of implementing a concept-based PE curriculum and identifying pathways for meaningful change.
