Abstract
First paragraph: Property was central to the lives of Jane Austen and her heroines. In her book, Women and Property Ownership in Jane Austen, Rita J. Dashwood argues that these relationships to property should be recontextualised outside of legal conceptions of ownership. Through a Marxist feminist framework, Dashwood suggests that non-legal forms of ownership constitute an “everyday form of resistance” in Austen’s novels and stakes claim to Austen as a radical author who focuses on the emotional dimensions of ownership (20). The connections between women’s bodies, property, and morality are analysed through conduct guides and contemporary literature to accurately situate Austen within the wider context of the period.
